Our Story

Launching a free English program

In the summer of 2017, within 30 days of arriving in Los Patos, Dominican Republic, we began a free summer program teaching English to the public. On the first day, we started with four students. At the end of one week, we had over 80 enrolled. Out of that program, we now teach over 350 students annually in the public school, with many becoming proficient. We have employed over five teachers who are former students to assist us in teaching year-round. Our current program also trains government-hired Dominican teachers to teach English, including assisting teachers on how to teach reading and writing in Spanish. After authoring our own curriculum, our team has adapted well to teaching English as a second and third language. In 2024, we launched our English Club program after selecting the brightest high school students to expand their English proficiency by teaching songs, games, real-life experiences and conversations.

Addressing Educational Challenges

Challenges

The public school system in the Dominican Republic ranks 168th out of 169 countries worldwide. The need for educational support is urgent.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is grounded in scripture, allowing us to share the Gospel as we teach. This unique foundation supports both language development and personal growth for the students we serve.

Expanding Access

A recent visitor to our program helped secure a donation of nearly 300 books for the school library. This achievement was made possible through Scholastic Books and the dedication of those who supported the initiative.

Making Progress

Since our program began in the Los Patos community, the government has completed a capital campaign to build a new school building. While this is a great step forward, students still lack essential resources, including books.
